Wood, laser engraved glass, paper, screws
Artist statement:
This piece is a symbolic representation of my perseverance through my experience of being diagnosed with PTSD. All 4 glass panels were hand-cut and then engraved with scanned images taken from a journal I kept throughout treatments I received in 2017. The origami bird inside the lamp is made from a page taken out of the same journal. The street light concept is a metaphorical representation of guidance, hope, and will to persevere. The color choice is also symbolic- the silver represents status and achievement, and the blue represents the calmness I feel towards this time period in retrospect.
This piece was created working from the base up and is almost entirely made from wood besides the glass panels. Some digital methods were used– the wooden panels holding the glass were laser cut for precision so that each would be the same size. Besides these panels, all other cutting was done by hand. Each section of this lamp adhered with not only wood glue but also double-sided screws.
Watch my process as I made this piece here, video documentation is at the end of the video.
