Artist statement:
In my piece Going Somewhere, I explore the idea of resilience and transparency when looking into the future. This door (22”x80”) is life-size, entirely made out of resin, and transparent. The transparency of the door is a symbolic representation of the clarity I have of my future and my resilience against any obstacles thrown my way. Cast onto the door is a projection of 12 edited videos of me spanning the years 2016-2020. These videos are all from particular hard times in my life and start from the time I was diagnosed with PTSD. Also in this video is text from a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins that reads, “Not, I'll not, carrion comfort, Despair, not feast on thee; Not untwist - slack they may be - these last strands of man. In me or, most weary, cry I can no more. I can; Can something, hope, wish day come, not choose not to be.” This text, along with the video projection, is only semi-visible as the projection onto the transparent surface of the door takes a little of the legibility away. I was more than happy about this decrease in visibility, for it further symbolizes that these things are memories of the past and not as vivid as they need to be.
I made this piece by casting an actual door. I created the casting out of Smooth-On polyurethane rubber VytaFlex-40. I created a wooden mold that surrounded the door by 1/2 an inch on all sides. After the rubber mold finished curing, I poured around 5 gallons of resin into the mold to create my transparent door casting. The entire door itself is a little thinner than an actual door and is only around 1/2 inch thick.
